EMC shielding is a technique employed to safeguard a delicate signal from the impact of external electromagnetic signals. It can also be used to prevent a more robust movement from escaping and interfering with surrounding electronics. The shielding can be applied to various components of a PCB, such as IC chips and active elements, connectors, and cables between PCBs. It is crucial to ensure the quality and dependability of electronic devices and comply with electromagnetic compatibility regulations and standards.

A metallic screen or conductive coating is used to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI). This screen either absorbs or reflects the EMI, which is transmitted through the air. The shield is then connected to a ground or virtual ground plane, which helps dissipate the interference-induced current. The entire surface of the sensitive or transmitting circuit must be covered continuously. Also, any holes or gaps in the shield must be considerably smaller than the wavelength of the EMI to ensure effective shielding.
